Sleepover at Surf: Why Kimpton Surfcomber Feels Like a Miami Beach Hotel Locals Can Actually Enjoy
September 29, 2026Miami’s food culture has always been shaped by migration. Caribbean kitchens sit alongside Indian restaurants, Latin American traditions mingle with flavors from Southeast Asia, and recipes brought across oceans inevitably begin absorbing something of South Florida along the way. Few dishes illustrate that exchange quite as naturally as curry.

This Saturday, October 3, the South Florida Curry Festival returns to Wynwood Marketplace for its second edition, bringing more than 50 food vendors together for six hours devoted to the remarkable number of things that can happen when spices, aromatics, heat and generations of culinary tradition meet in a pot. Following a sold-out debut, this year's festival runs from 5 to 11 p.m. and expands beyond food into music, performance, competition and a marketplace celebrating the cultures behind the cooking. What makes the festival interesting is the premise itself. There is no single definition of curry. Depending on where you grew up, the word might conjure an entirely different combination of spices, proteins, vegetables and cooking techniques. Across South Asia and the Caribbean—and through countless communities beyond them—curry has evolved into an enormous family of dishes shaped by geography, history and the people preparing them.
That diversity will be the point in Wynwood. Rather than coming for one definitive expression, the pleasure should be in moving between vendors and tasting the contrasts. More than 50 participants are expected to serve curries and other global dishes, making this less a traditional dinner than an opportunity to graze your way across cultures over the course of an evening. More Than a Food Festival
There will be plenty happening between bites. A live curry cook-off brings a competitive element to the evening, while the returning pepper-eating contest is reserved for those whose relationship with capsaicin borders on reckless. Live music and cultural performances will continue throughout the festival, and a Spice Market & Bazaar will give guests an opportunity to explore products and ingredients beyond the prepared food. Newer additions broaden the experience further. THE FARM, created in collaboration with Redland Fresh Farm, introduces a local marketplace component, while THE GROVE creates a private 21-and-over area for beer and socializing, including pours from local craft breweries and international producers. It's an ambitious combination, but one that makes sense in Wynwood. Food is the reason to arrive; the music, culture and communal atmosphere provide reasons to stay.
Come Hungry
The best strategy may be not to have much of one. Arrive hungry, bring friends and resist filling up at the first vendor that smells irresistible. With more than 50 to explore, half the fun should be discovering something unfamiliar.
The festival is also designed to be approachable for families: children 12 and younger receive free admission, though outside food and beverages are not permitted. Eventbrite
For a city whose culinary identity is increasingly defined by the cultures that coexist within it, the South Florida Curry Festival feels particularly appropriate. This isn't simply an evening dedicated to spice. It's an opportunity to taste how different communities can begin with an idea as seemingly familiar as curry and arrive somewhere entirely their own.
And in Miami, that's a story worth eating your way through.
